Ocean Action - Humans Make Plastic

It was a pleasure to be the invited artist at Ocean Action . Humans Make Plastic was showcased alongside a day of making a new Humans Make Plastic piece which as ever encouraged dialogue around consumption, waste and ocean issues and also encouraged conference participants to have a go at making.

Before the conference which was held in Brussels I spent a few days in Belgium. During this time I visited my friends, who commissioned a Gem Inlay piece for the EurOCEAN2019 conference last June in Paris, at The European Marine Board in Ostend.

The beach at Ostend is wide and goes on as far as the eye can see.

Although the beach looks pristine, on closer inspection there is all manner of manmade items, small and large. This is the case with all the beaches and inland water systems that I have worked with.

Plastics found at Ostend, the tidal Thames and the London canal system, make up part of Humans Make Plastic III.

Thanks to Seas at Risk for arranging Ocean Action and for taking an innovative approach involving policy makers, artists, scientists and engaged members of the public.
