Living River Mobiles is being run by artist Camilla Brendon at LDM to mark Earth Day. This informal and creative workshop will explore how nature coexists with the River Thames and Docklands.
The workshop will be in two parts a river bed walk where participants will have the opportunity to gather items, both natural and man made to incorporate into their mobile.
The second part will be held inside the museum. Participants will design a mobile which can be used as a planter or hanging basket. Each mobile will be unique and could represent the earth, river or any aspect of nature which is important to the person who is making it. Chicken wire weaving will be used in the making process and participants will have access to a variety of salvaged materials along with what they collect during the riverwalk.
Seeds will be supplied and towards the end of the workshop each person will choose what to plant, things like watercress and mint will be available. Varieties of these plants grow on land and in running water, the plants will act as a reminder and tie to the river for participants as they watch them grow from home.
Camilla Brendon uses colour and form inspired by ocean habitats and issues to create visually appealing installations from found materials. Since 2018 CB’s project, called Coast, has investigated plastics, phytoplankton and kelp. Her art provides a platform for dialogue around sustainability and facilitates debate, learning and experimentation. She is dedicated to interdisciplinary collaborations with community groups and scientists to engage wide audiences.
